Capital New York has picked up a Buzzfeed report that Gawker might start a weathercentric site:

Gawker has been soliciting applications from writers ahead of starting a weather-focused site tentatively to be named The Vane, Buzzfeed's Charlie Warzel reports.

Last week, Gawker editor John Cook tweeted a call for junior bloggers willing to write about weather and "news coverage thereof."

According to the piece, this comes as other sites across the web are investing in weather coverage and reporters. While I definitely think it's not a bad idea, I think they might be looking to run a sub-site a la Defamer/Valleywag instead of a completely new site. But Nick Denton's rich and I'm not, so what do I know?
