Like many-a young students, when I was in high school/middle school I "read" classic literature in English class. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. However, I think I was too young to appreciate most of these works and frequently only read for the test.

My plan is to read some of these books this summer. First on my list are Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Any suggestions on other "classic" books one would enjoy as an adult? Or any suggestions on which ones to stay away from? I realize this is all subjective based on everyone's individual preferences, but suggestions are appreciated. I've read 1984, Animal Farm, and Catcher in the Rye relatively recently, so those are off the list.

What say you?
