I mentioned in a reply to Charlie Jane's post about the fourth wall, Gracie Allen's run for President in 1940. Initially conceived as a publicity stunt for the Burns & Allen radio show and even though Roosevelt was so assured of re-election, Eleanor invited her to address the Women's Press Club in DC, the campaign took on a life of it's own, complete with a whistlestop train tour to her Surprise Party's convention in Omaha.
