So it turns out that one of the writers of Irwin Allen's wonderful 1974 disaster pic (in so many ways) The Towering Inferno used his payday to move to San Francisco and help Harvey Milk become one of the first openly gay elected officials in the country.

Frank M. Robinson co-wrote The Glass Inferno; he also wrote a number of well-received science fiction novels. He died on Monday at his home in San Francisco, the New York Times reports. He was 87.
