Contribution: Robin Thicke is one half of the duo Justin and Robin (J&R). He was one the pioneer of bringing soulful type singing out of the church and onto the radio. Robin and Blues (R&B) took over the radio and was the only thing that could get great artists like Macklamore and Taylor Swift to share radio time.
Recently, in an interview with Barbra Walters, he was asked how he felt about being the only person to win two Greatest Singer of a Generation awards at the Grammy's:
I remember when I was choir director at this mostly black church. I was listening to them and something wasn't right. They didn't have "it" ya know.
While trying to figure out what I could do, one of the singers came up to me with sadness. Justin I think his name was. "We just don't know what to do Robin. Why don't you help us." I was thinking that there wasn't much I could do to help them. So I felt blue. That's when it hit me. We should sing the songs like we're sad.
The next day I came up to them and said, "hey guys I have an idea. We should sing songs with a little bit more rhythm and a lot more blues." That is when I came up with R&B or Robin & Blues.
Robin Thicke never did answer the original question.
