Many Christmas mornings ago, 12-year-old Michael Thomasson got the video game cartridge for Cosmic Avenger. Just the cartridge. Because of a family mix-up he had to wait another year before he received the Colecovision console to play it.
Thomasson has more than made up for lost time, amassing a collection of 10,607 video games — the world record, according to those folks at the just-released "Guinness World Records 2014 Gamer's Edition."
Now 43, Thomasson designs games and teaches 2D animation, game design and the history of video games at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.. He also writes on the topic for magazines and books.
But unlike the stereotypical game geek, he's married (A Christmas miracle? "She knew what she was getting into"). With a kid. And even as he adds to his collection, which now tops 11,000 titles, his gaming time is limited. "I probably get three hours of playing in a week," he said. "If I'm lucky."
