So Monday is my least favorite federal holiday. I just posted about this elsewhere and realized it might warrant a share over here, too. The Oatmeal recently suggested replacing Columbus Day with Bartolome (de las Casas) Day*. I humbly suggest instead:
Native American Pride Day
Leonard Peltier Day (man arrested and imprisoned after participating in American Indian Movement activities and fighting federal officers on reservation land, and may believe wrongfully convicted of murder)
His Horses are Spirited Day (Crazy Horse’s real name)
Wounded Knee Day
Trail of Broken Treaties Day
Sequoyah Day (the man who created the Cherokee syllabary and allowed his people to become more literate than the surrounding white settlers)
My personal favorite: Annie Mae Aquash Day. She participated in AIM activities throughout the early and mid 1970s, including occupying the Department of Interior headquarters in DC and the activities at Wounded Knee in 1973. She was found dead in 1975. Initially it was reported by an incompetent ME that she died of exposure, but she was in fact shot in the head. Her hands were cut off and sent to DC and she was buried as a Jane Doe. Only when AIM started kicking up a fuss did anyone pay any sort of attention to her murder. She was alcohol and drug free in a time when that was particularly remarkable in any community, let alone the Native American population. No one was convicted for her murder until 2004.
None of these stories are unproblematic. But I, for one, would much rather see a Native person's name or a Native group's history on that day than yet another white man's.
(sorry/not sorry for the rant)
*This almost makes up for his constant "flyover states" bullcrap.
Anybody you'd like to see on this list? Any other federal holiday that annoys the crap out of you?
