Healthcare Spending per Year and Average Life Expectancy

Dear Governor Bentley is currently in Japan kissing ass and prostituting his state in the name of JOBS. Of course, Bentley manages to ignore the 35,000 or so jobs that would be created by embracing the Affordable Care Act and expanding Medicaid.

But, as Japan has universal healthcare, it's not inconceivable that Governor Bentley might learn something. Or perhaps some inscrutable bit of negotiating will give Japan the spark to encourage our dear governor to do the right thing.

Anyhoo, chart came from an article in Forbes, http://www.forbes.com/sites/danmunro…, chart number three in an article entitled "Two Obamacare Charts". Per person healthcare spending in Alabama is $6,272 according to http://kff.org/other/state-in…, and, tied for 49th place out of the fifty states, Alabamians have an average life expectancy of 75.4 years according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U… .

The icing on top of Governor Bentley's "Medicaid is broken" cake is the likelihood that by not expanding Medicaid Alabama hospitals will have their credit downgraded with the net effect of making all healthcare for all Alabamians more expensive.

On the plus side, I think ALEC is going celebrate Oliver North's next visit to Alabama by building an altar in Montgomery, so they won't have to keep shipping the human sacrifices out of state.
