Obama's Speech: As Good As It Gets

Is President Obama borrowing lines from Oscar- and Emmy-winning writer and director James L. Brooks?

In his speech at Nelson Mandela's memorial service today, Obama said: "While I will always fall short of Madiba's example, he makes me want to be a better man."

Sound familiar? Go back to the 1997 hit movie "As Good As It Gets," in which Jack Nicholson tries the same line on Helen Hunt (go to 1:20 in the clip).

Brooks got an Oscar nomination for his work on the screenplay; Nicholson and Hunt won Oscars for their performances. If you're going to borrow (ahem), borrow from the best.

ETA: If you can post an earlier citation for the line, please do.
