This has been making the news rounds here in the Southland. Tom Greer, an 80-year-old homeowner, fatally shot one of two people who broke into his Long Beach home. But it's not quite as simple as that sounds.
Greer returned to his home Tuesday night to find a man and a woman in the middle of a break-in. They jumped him and ransacked his safe. However, he was able to get his pistol.
Here are some of Greer's quotes explaining what happened next:
"I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run."
"The lady didn't run as fast as the man, so I shot her two times. She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant. I'm going to have a baby'. But I shot her anyway.''
"She was dead. I shot her twice, she best be dead ... (The man) had run off and left her."
"I shot her so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life."
I have a lot of trouble seeing this as self defense since the couple was running away. But I can also see a prosecutor not wanting to bring charges against Greer since it only takes one juror sympathizing with Greer to hang a jury and there's a real chance a jury would acquit him.
